CBC Statement on FDA MSM Deferral Policy

Community Blood Center is driven by our dedication to saving lives and strengthening the health of our communities. We cannot achieve this without the help of generous blood donors every day.

For decades, federal policies have prevented us from fully embracing some potential donors due to policies that determine donor eligibility based on sexual orientation. Over the years, we have advocated for scientifically-based changes to these policies.

Last year, the FDA shortened the deferral period for men who have sex with men from 12 months to 3 months. We wholly support this progress and are participating in studies that evaluate the individual risk profiles of blood donors with the goal of supporting additional evidence-based changes.

The U.S. is fortunate to have elected leaders fighting for change to the FDA policies and we will continue to advocate for further changes alongside them. We believe that further changes will ensure a diverse and ample donor pool as well as a safe and reliable blood supply for patients in need.
